Harbor House Happenings

Transitional Employment Placements

Harbor House is pleased to announce that we have secured two T.E positions at NAMI. Two of Harbor House members started at the end of August working as Administration Assistants. Peter Haas and Jeremiah Rainville are the first of the Harbor House members to start in this these positions. Harbor House will be able to place two new members in this position every 6-9 months.

“The T.E. position at NAMI as an administration assistant has been rewarding and a positive experience. I am gaining experience that is professional and worthwhile. This T.E. is giving me a new hope that I can work competitively one day.” ~Jeremiah Rainville

Harbor House has been hopping with visitors. In May, Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts paid a call to learn about Harbor House. Members were impressed that she shared her valuable time.  She listened and responded positively as she learned about the clubhouse mission and members’ stories.

In June, Stephanie Chafee, First Lady of Rhode Island, came to Harbor House to tour and meet with members. The visit supported her personal reputation for giving back to the community. She agreed that some people are still afraid of mental illness and she hoped to draw attention to Harbor House and the wonderful things being accomplished here.  Members were touched by her visit and had the opportunity to share their life journeys. Mrs. Chafee admitted being impressed with their openness. “It really humbled me,” she said.

In addition, many tours are conducted weekly to prospective members, family members, community organizations, and service providers. Call 401-273-5100 to schedule a day and time to come visit. You are most welcome. Or come to the Open House on September 21, 2011 and learn what makes Harbor House special.

Transitional Employment and Career Center Underway

Jeremiah Rainville, Lori Cragan, Harbor House RIC Intern

The first Transitional Employment placements for Harbor House members are scheduled for late summer at NAMI-RI. This is very exciting news as the clubhouse mission and certification by the International Center for Clubhouse Development hinges on having established TEs.  We are delighted that NAMI-RI has agreed to provide two part-time positions to be filled by Harbor House members. For more information on TEs, see page 4.

In addition, the peer-run Harbor House Career Center has begun regular unit meetings to help members reach their education and career goals.  In the Job Club, members share ideas and job leads, critique resumes, and practice interview skills.  The Career Center also supports members’ efforts to advance their education and career training.

Adam Alt is working towards an accounting certificate at CCRI. He continues to work in NAMI-RI’s Inside Mental Illness program giving presentations at local schools to educate students about mental illness. In July, he attended NAMI’s International Convention in Chicago as NAMI-RI’s National Council Representative Alternate.

Congratulations to Jeremiah Rainville on his certificate of higher learning from Dorcas Place. He’ll enter CCRI in the fall.
