From the Executive Director, Ralph Lord

Now that we have opened our doors it has been non-stop. Mike Moniz and I, along side our members, have created a variety of work to be done on a daily basis. Our reception area is open and inviting, the administration unit is developing and coordinating our needed data base, membership is developing an outreach program to attract new members to Harbor House. We are blessed with a large open greenhouse room that not only serves as our community space but kitchen/dining room. It is definitely the favored space for all of us.

We are on target to meet our initial goal of fifteen members this month and hope by the number of interested people calling for tours to exceed this within a couple of months. We are scheduling tours for two to three people weekly. Some of these tours are for family, friends and community partners interested in Harbor House. These community partners have included Adoption RI, Fellowship Health Resources, South Shore Center, The Providence Center, East Bay Center and Riverwood. We are preparing to reach out at their request to Butler Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital Fatima Unit.

This spring has given us the pleasure of hosting two of RI’s important people. In April, RI Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts, and then in June, RI’s First Lady Stephanie Chafee stopped by for visits. These were truly highlights of our spring season, having the opportunity to visit and share the story of our members and how Harbor House came to exist.

We are setting up our first Transitional Employment Placements, a very exciting milestone. For information about Transitional Employment, see the article on page 4 in our Newsletter. Our Open House will be held September 21 but if you’d like to arrange another time and day to visit, please call me. We look forward to sharing Harbor House with all of you.
