About Us

Harbor House, the first independent Clubhouse open to all Rhode Islanders, is a safe harbor for those living with mental illnesses who seek community, understanding, and a productive life. Members can engage with each other to regain their confidence, experience productive employment, and re-enter society.

Members are responsible for the operation of the Clubhouse, in collaboration with a small professional staff. Membership is free. Membership is for life.

Harbor House is organized around a work-ordered day in a supportive environment. Members of Harbor House operate the facility in collaboration with a small professional staff and engage in a variety of work experiences. They can try several transitional employment placements and move on to independent employment. They can be given help to acquire a job of their own with ongoing support.

Harbor House is modeled on the Fountain House, established in New York in 1948. There are over 300 Clubhouses around the world. The International Center for Clubhouse Development provides the standards for successful operation and certification.
